Indigo Denim Polo
free pattern - denim Polo Machine used: Brother electronic standard gauge
(can be adapted for any machine)

Materials: Indigo Cotton Denim 2 Ply, single stranded )or substitute other yarn to get gauge)
I used natural and light blue for this striped pattern.

Tension: T6
This cotton, as most will, is going to shrink a little. I made up a swatch of 60sts by 60 rws, T6. After washing, the gauge was 8.9sts=11rws=1".

Size: S - M - L
(adjust number of stitches based on gauge to fit more sizes)

Back:

  1. T3/3. Cast on (178, 186, 196) sts in 1x1 ribbing (We are going to make a ribbed facing). K 15 rws in 1x1 rib.
  2. Transfer ribber sts to main bed. COR. T6. Set carriage to HOLD. RC000.
Program machine to use a 1x1 stripe.
Set carriage to pattern (end needle selected). Move carriage across the pattern sensor.
  3. Place 36 sts on L edge to HOLD. (We are creating a slight pull on the corners so the edges won't sag)
Knit across, setting up pattern (needles should be selected in pattern).
  4. Attach second yarn. Place 36 sts on R edge to HOLD. Knit across.
  5. (Place 12 sts on side opposite carr to work and K across) 6 times. All stitches are now in work.
  6. K in pattern to RC 258.
  7. Begin neck shaping: (shape R side first)
COR. Place sts (L89, L93, L98) through R10 to HOLD. K across, COL.
Bind off 13 sts at R neck edge, K across, K 1 rw.
Bind off 7 sts at R neck edge, K across, K 1 rw.
Bind off 3 sts at R neck edge, K across, K 1 rw.

  2. K in pattern to RC146.
  3. Begin neck shaping: (shape right side first)
COR. Place sts (L89, L93, L98) through R6 to HOLD.
    K to RC240. Bind off 8 sts at R neck edge, K across, K 1 rw.
Bind off 4 sts at R neck edge, K across, K 1 rw.
(Bind off 3 sts at R neck edge, K across, K 1 rw.) 3 times.

Dec 1 st at R neck edge, then again every 4th row 2 times. K 2 rws. RC266. Bind off remaining.
  4. Attach yarns to rightmost ndl on HOLD (R6) and bind off 12 sts.

Sleeve: (make 2)
(Sleeve will be same size for all sizes - S, M, L.)

  1. T3/3. Cast on 152 sts (L76 - R76) in 1x1 ribbing (We are going to make a ribbed facing). K 15 rws in 1x1 rib.
  2. Transfer ribber sts to main bed. COR. T6. Set carriage to HOLD. RC000.
Program machine to use a 1x1 stripe.
Set carriage to pattern (end needle selected). Move carriage across the pattern sensor.
  3. Place 24 sts on L side to HOLD. (We are creating a slight pull on the corners so the edges won't sag)
Knit across, setting up pattern (needles should be selected in pattern).
  4. Attach second yarn. Place 24 sts on R side to HOLD. Knit across.
  5. (Place 12 sts on side opposite carr to work and K across) 4 times. All stitches are now in work.
  6. RC006. K in pattern, increasing 1 st at each edge every 4th row 22 times.
  7. RC88, 196 sts. Bind off.

Front Band:
(Bands will be same size for all sizes - S, M, L.)

  1. Done in stockinette st in pattern, double length and folded over. T5
  2. Do the R band first:
    • Wrong side of fabric facing. Placing one corner of the neck opening on ndl R1, lightly stretch the fabric. Make note of how many ndls will be needed for the band. (I used 80 sts, - ndls R1 - R80.) ewrap over these ndls. Hang the neck edge (pick up 1/2 of the edge stitch) on the main bed on top of the ewrapped ndls - this will give a nice finished edge.
    • K in pattern 6 rws.
    • Make buttonholes evenly spaced. I chose to do a 4-ndl buttonhole, and chose 4 evenly spaced holes.
    • K 12 rws.
    • Make buttonholes on same ndls for the facing part of the band.
    • K 6 rows.
    • Bind off.
  3. Repeat for L side, eliminating buttonholes (after caston/hanging, K 26 rws, Bind off).
  4. Fold over and hand sew the facings in place.

Collar:
(Collar will be same size for all sizes - S, M, L.)

  1. Done in stockinette st in pattern, double length and folded over. T6.
  2. ewrap over ndls L77-R77. Cast on, hang comb and weights.
  3. Set carriage to K in pattern.
  4. Inc 1 ea side every other row 11 times.
  5. Dec 1 ea side every other rw 11 times.
  6. Bind off.

Pocket:

  1. I used my tension swatch! 60sts by 60 rws, T6.

Finishing:

  1. Sew shoulder seams.
  2. Sew collar to neck edge.
  3. Sew sleeves to armhole edge.
  4. Sew side seams, leaving open the bottom edge where the facing is, about 1 1/2 inches.
  5. Attach buttons.
  6. Since my tension swatch was used as the pocket, I washed the garment first then attached the pocket (the tension swatch had been pre-washed)
